Member Spotlight: 211 Maine

This month, Inform USA is delighted to highlight 211 Maine on the occasion of its 20-year anniversary connecting people throughout Maine with health and human services.
Since it became a statewide service in 2006, 211 Maine has answered more than 1.3 million calls from people in need of assistance in housing, food, transportation, behavioral health services, substance use treatment, utility payment assistance, and other issues. 211 Maine operates round-the-clock seven days per week, with locally staffed support seven days a week, 365 days a year.
On July 7, 211 Maine celebrated its 20-year anniversary with a reception at The Opportunity Alliance, which is home to Maine's 211 call center. Community partners, state partners, funders, supporters, and current and former staff joined in celebrating the partnerships and people behind the organization for the last 20 years.
"During our 20 years, 211 has been constantly evolving to meet new needs," said Courtney Yeager, president of 211 Maine Board of Directors and president/CEO of United Way of Kennebec Valley.
In addition to evolving to meet new needs, 211 Maine supported many major initiatives in Maine including the Opiate Helpline, Gambling Helpline, and Keep ME Warm Fund. The organization has also provided reliable information during health emergencies, natural disasters, and even everyday issues Mainers may face.
Maine Emergency Management Agency also recognized the contribution of 211 Maine to emergency management and preparedness.
"At MEMA, we are proud to work with 211 Maine, as clear information and strong community connections are vital during emergencies and disasters," said Joe Legee, deputy director of MEMA. "Together, we make Maine better prepared, better connected, and more resilient."
Behind those statistics and achievements are people facing difficult situations. Derek Morin, contact center manager for 211 Maine, shared his thoughts about the human element of 211 Maine's work.
"Many people call us when they don't know anywhere else to go," said Morin. "Sometimes they are feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or simply tired of dealing with their issues by themselves. At times this work can be tough, but it is also incredibly inspiring."
Despite 211 Maine being part of nationwide system that reaches 99% of US population, commitment to locally staffed support round-the-clock is something that makes the service particularly important for the communities it serves.
"No matter when people are ready to ask for help, there is someone local on the other end of the phone willing to help," said Nikki Williams, program director for 211 Maine. "Being in a state such as Maine, where people value their local connections and helping each other, this commitment is especially important."
To recognize the milestone, Governor Janet Mills signed proclamation declaring July 7, 2026 as 211 Maine Day. Representatives from the offices of U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King were also present at the celebration.
For 20 years, 211 Maine proved what could be achieved when community organizations, government agencies, funders, and professionals work together to connect people to the help they need.
Congratulations on the milestone and thank you for your 20 years of work!
