Government Shutdown: Unpack Your Patience

Posted By: Sandra Ray Industry News,

A government shutdown is a difficult concept for many people to wrap their heads around. How can the government shut down when there are all these needs? What about my benefits? What about this appointment I have scheduled?

The most important concept for Community Navigation programs to consider during a government shutdown is that we are the go-to place when people are hurting. They are contacting you because the thought of a shutdown is unimaginably difficult, yet they trust you with the answers they need.

So, why did we title this blog  “unpack” your patience? Well, most of the time, your patience is packed into a neat “bag,” and you may only use it a few times per day. You may pull it out for those especially difficult conversations, and then pack it back away until you need it again.

During a government shutdown, however, you may find that your patience is needed for almost every person who contacts your Community Navigation program. You barely have time to pack it away before you need it again.

In addition to patience, you’ll need compassion, empathy, respect, active listening, and definitely your brainstorming skills. There may be few resources available to help when the main source of the help seeker’s assistance is unavailable, with no easy end in sight. During the last government shutdown, we know our food pantries, food banks, and other resources were stretched to the breaking point. People who contacted your services may have been absolutely desperate, clinging to hope - and you came through for them! Even if you did not have a specific resource, you worked through their options and, most of all, provided a listening ear.

We have no way to know what this shutdown will bring. We know, however, that you and your programs are the trusted connection point. You’ve built that reputation diligently. Your community trusts you above all other services to provide them with answers no one else knows. If you don’t know the answer, you can be that voice of hope or that compassionate person behind the text or chat communication. You provide home and connection in a world that seems chaotic.

One area we haven’t discussed yet is the importance of taking time for yourself. When you’re constantly unpacking your bags, you may feel that you have nothing left for yourself. Make sure you are taking time to debrief with your supervisors or coaches. Let your supervisor know if you need extra time. Practice some desk stretches or desk yoga; stay hydrated and get plenty of rest.

Above all, in this time of change in our communities, you matter.
