Member Spotlight: National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF)
We are honored to spotlight the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Novato, California that has been serving the alopecia areata community since 1981. NAAF’s mission is to drive research to find a cure and accessible treatments, support those impacted by the disease, and educate the public about alopecia areata.
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss and can have a significant emotional and social impact. NAAF recognizes these challenges and provides meaningful opportunities for individuals and families to find connection and support. Their programs include support groups, a Youth Mentor Program, one on one phone support, educational webinars, and workshops. These offerings are designed to help individuals feel understood and connected to others who share similar experiences.
Education is another central part of NAAF’s work. The Foundation provides accessible information and resources for people living with alopecia areata, parents and caregivers, teens, adults, school staff, and healthcare professionals. These materials help deepen understanding of the disease and provide practical tools for navigating treatment options, insurance, and daily life.
Research advancement is also a key pillar of the organization. Since 1985, NAAF has awarded more than 215 research grants totaling over 6.5 million dollars to advance scientific knowledge of alopecia areata and support the development of potential treatments. Research supported by NAAF has contributed to increased understanding of the disease and has helped generate additional funding from other sources.
In addition, NAAF hosts events and community engagement opportunities that bring people together, raise awareness, and strengthen connection within the alopecia areata community.
